 Bowhunting 2009
« Thread Started on Oct 12, 2009, 11:01pm »

Just wondering how everyone has done so far?

I have had an eventfull season so far. I managed to kill a good doe Thursday but Saturday was very exciting. I had been hunting a cornfield that a bear had been tearing up. Saturday afternoon I was sitting there yet again and decided to try the fawn distress on my deer call. I went through the series for a couple minutes and it sounded like a whole herd of deer came crashing in the field. next thing I knew a huge black bear came running towards me and stopped about 40 yards in front of me and stood uo on his back legs looking for me. He was popping his jaws and huffing. He dropped down on all fours again and got within 20 yards of me. I shot him right in the shoulder blade which did not penetrate any vitals and the arrow just fell out after a coulpe of bounds as he ran off. I can only dream of getting that chance again in Scott County.

Hey Jason , was your heart just a pumpin' or what !!!??? ... I can visualize your experience and that'll be one you can tell the grandkids where real-life trumps video games hand down !!! ... I saw four does coming across the crest of the middle field at the Amelia WMA last Saturday , all in a row, going slow , sporadically eating the tops off the DGIF sunflower field, they were what I thought to be 150 yds. away , farther than my longest 60 yd. bow shot on deer , so I just watched hoping for an out of sight buck to come out corral the does and get closer to me but it never came about ... stepped off the distance about two hours later to find out I was wrong on the 150yd estimate, was an actual 183 yds. ...so I piled up some field rocks snowman-style at 200 yds ... plan to do a couple target shots with the Remington 870 express w/ my rifled slug barrel and the new Remington Accutip 3inch 12 gauge saboted slugs up at my Dads next week in upstate NY at the 200 yd range behind his house ... who knows ... might do some of that impertinent Sunday hunting up there too 'cause its legal there !!! HA !!

Seems as though the bear population has really risen in Scott County the past few years. Theres been one tearing up stuff behind my house and my neighbors. Absolutely destroyed his peaches this year. Also a friend from HS got a picture of a very large bear in Pattonsville on his trail cam last week.

3 had been checked in at Front Porch thru the first Monday of the season. One was taken by long bow and wooden shafted arrows.

Speaking with Eric Ross at Front Porch Store, and he says they have had more bear checked in this year than anything. Im sure that has something do to with people calling in their kills of deer.
