"A Hunt Above" Youth Deer Hunt « Result #3 on Nov 17, 2009, 7:45am »
We at "A Hunt Above" had the opportunity to take a young man named Brandon on a whitetail deer hunt. This hunt was in memory of Brett LaRoe. Brett was born December 11, 1988 and passed away on Monday, September 21, 2009 at the age of 20. Brett was an outgoing young man who loved his family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman whose passion was hunting and fishing. He had such a caring spirit and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Brett was also a prankster with a great sense of humor. His presence will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family tribute: "Brett always wore a smile on his face that could light up a room, melt a heart or instill trust in such a way that spoke volumes about his character. Brett loved to hunt and fish, spend time with his friends and most of all spend time with family. Brett always had the ability to make anyone laugh or smile … he is loved and will be missed." So, we at "A Hunt Above" were honored to do this trip in Brett's memory.
Brandon is 15 years old and is in remission from Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. Brandon is in the 10th grade and is the back up kicker for his football team. Brandon enjoys football, hunting and fishing, but really enjoys soccer. He enjoys soccer so much, that the day he had surgery to remove a 6 X 6 centimeter mass from his neck, and he made it to his teams Division II State Championship. When word got around that Brandon showed up for the game, kids from other teams and strangers all gathered and prayed with Brandon. Brandon ended up scoring four goals that day to help his team to victory. Brandon's mom said "When a complete stranger will come up and pray with you, that's a good thing." Brandon gives all the credit for his recovery to God. Brandon said "God put me on this earth to do what I have to do, to play soccer and teach other people about God."
Meet Brandon:
Well, God was on this trip with Brandon and along with everyone else who helped on this hunt. Mike Macko (Director of "A Hunt Above") met Brandon and his dad (Danny) early Saturday morning. Also joining us was James Bell ("A Hunt Above"), Chuck Bagwell ("A Hunt Above") and Chuck's son Aaron, whom was being mentored by Mike Macko. We arrived at our guest Dan Robinson's place, Anevay ( an Indian word for "superior place") around 5 AM and did the usual meet and greet. It wasn't long before it was time to head to the stand. That morning Brandon and his dad, along with James who was filming this hunt, went to their stand location. The morning was uneventful as no deer made any presence. That afternoon Brandon tried his luck fishing in Dan's well stocked lake. Brandon did catch a few small ones.
The Group:
After a nice lunch it was time to head out for the evening hunt. Brandon sat patiently in the stand waiting on the deer to show. After thinking the evening would go on without the opportunity to get a chance to harvest a deer, there were 3 deer spotted. Brandon got a little nervous and took steady aim. It was getting late and it was time to make the shot. Brandon put an excellent shot on a 100 pound doe at 140 yards. This was Brandon's first deer harvest. He was so excited. He said that God had his hand on the bullet and guided it to a clean and ethical shot.
We went and picked Brandon and his deer up and return to camp for pictures and high fives. Brandon was nick named the "Silent Assassin".
After taking care of the deer we all enjoyed a fantastic dinner cooked by the camp chief Monty Blount.
We at "A Hunt Above" would like to thank all the donors who made this trip happen, especially friends and family of Brett LaRoe, and a dear friend of "A Hunt Above", Veronica Viner, whose son is also in remission from Hodgkin's lymphoma.
We also would like to thank Dan Robinson and his helpers for a fantastic time on his place.
We would like to continue to pray for Brandon and John Viner to continue to be in remission and beat this cancer. We would also like to continue our prayers for Brett LaRoe's family and friends.

Anna's Hog Hunt « Result #4 on Nov 10, 2009, 8:54pm »
We at "A Hunt Above" had the pleasure to take a sweet young 12 year old girl on a hog hunting trip in Texas. Her name is Anna and she is recovering from Ewing Sarcoma, which is a bone cancer. When Anna was 2 1/2 years old she broke her right arm. While in the hospital the doctors noticed the bone cancer and immediately sent her to St. Jude in Memphis, TN. While she was at St. Jude's the doctors had to remove the bone from the elbow to the shoulder on her right arm. Anna continued improvement and did everything a little girl could do while growing up. She even played softball up until last year, catching and throwing with her left arm. Anna had went on previous deer hunting trips, but just wasn't sure about shooting a gun. Then the "hunting bug" bit her while she was dove hunting in September of 2009. She told her step-dad that she wanted to go on a deer hunt now. Anna's step-dad contacted "A Hunt Above" and we both decided to gain experience for Anna and to keep her interest in hunting that we would take her on a hog hunt. Not only would it build her confidence, but she would see plenty of hogs to keep her interest in hunting.
You all meet Anna:
Mike Macko (director of "A Hunt Above") met up with Anna and her step-dad Heath for the short trip to Cedar Springs Hog Hunts (http://www.cedarspringshoghunts.com/details.php) in East Texas. We also met Chad Mesa from Messa Sky Outdoor Photography (http://www.mesaskyphotography.com/). Chad was going on the trip to assist in taking pictures for Anna and for "A Hunt Above".
We made it to the camp and saw hogs when we pulled in the gate. We all knew it was going to be a great trip. Randy Arfele (co-director of "A Hunt Above") joined us shortly after we arrived. We all made small talk around the campfire and played some pool and then retired for the evening. The next morning Anna saw plenty of hogs, but not any she wanted to take. We left the stand and around mid-morning Randy saw some hogs crossing a road and call Mike Casey (owner of Cedar Springs Hog Hunts) to get Anna out there to see if she could get a shot on one. Anna headed down to the location and spotted one she wanted and took a shot with her .243. It was a hit and after a short tracking job we found her 70 lb sow. Anna was very excited. Here's a picture of her with her sow.
After a late breakfast and some TV watching it was time to hit the stand for the afternoon hunt. We got Anna to her stand and it was only 10 minutes in her hunt and a nice group of hogs came in the stand site. Anna picked out the biggest one and put an excellent shot on the hog. There was no tracking this one, as it expired immediately. Here is a picture of the shot.
If you look closely you can see the bullet exiting her rifle.
Here is a picture of her second hog which was a 90 lb sow.
We would like to thank Mike Casey from Cedar Springs Hog Hunts and Chad Messa from Messa Sky Outdoor Photography for donating their time and efforts on this hunt.
(Group Picture)
We would like to also thank the supporters who helped with the cost of this trip.
Please continue to pray for Anna to stay cancer free and for any upcoming surgeries for reconstruction to her arm.

Speaking with Eric Ross at Front Porch Store, and he says they have had more bear checked in this year than anything. Im sure that has something do to with people calling in their kills of deer.

Not been on in a while « Result #17 on Oct 25, 2009, 8:57pm »
Well as the title says, Ive not been on here in a while. I got a job, bought a new kayak, and got my arse handed to me by school. Today I did get an opportunity to fish a little at Big Cherry. It was a so-so day but I got three on my Carrot Stick Gold spinning rod that I hadn't had a chance to use yet. So, how have you all been?
